StormHacks is a beginner-friendly event that’s open to all students (no programming experience required). Join hackers from across the globe to learn new skills, meet new people, and build a project with social impact. To support you and keep you engaged throughout the journey, we’ll have workshops, mentors, sponsor spotlight sessions, mini-contests, and lots of prizes! StormHacks is a MLH Member Event for the 2022 Season.

Requirements

⚡️Submitting Your Project⚡️

  Eligibility:

    • Your team MUST submit your project to Devpost by 9:00 AM PST on Sunday, February 20th to be considered for judging.
    • When submitting your project, you can select as many "themes" as you like to be considered for the prize.
    • ***To clarify the "themes" on Devpost are non-mandatory prizes that you can select if your project meets the criteria. Please ignore the 'Awards' section when submitting.
    • If you've created a GitHub Repo for your project, you must include the link in your Devpost submission
  • All teams must have 2-4 people.

Best Use of Explainable Machine Learning

The project that best showcases an ML product and explanations of the model’s predictions. $300 to the winning team, 2x$50 vouchers to Uber Eats, and a virtual lunch with a senior data scientist from the Intact Lab.

Best Beginner Hack

The winning team will be receiving Wireless speakers or a hyper X headset for each member of the team! Teams must be at least 50% first-time hackers to be eligible.

Winning teams will win a $200 cash prize.

Best Pitch

The winning team will receive a high-quality streaming microphone for each member of the team!

Best Terminal Prize Sponsored by Software Systems Student Society

This award goes to the best project that only used the IDE terminal or command line as its GUI. The team behind this project used the very first tool of any programming journey and stretched it to its limit with impressive results. The winning team will receive a total of $300 CAD.

Best use of AssemblyAI

This award goes to the team that builds the best project using the AssemblyAI API. The winners will receive a $200.00 (Amazon gift card)

Best Domain Name from Domain.com

Register a .tech, .space, or .online domain name using Domain.com during the weekend. Each team may submit one entry per person on the team. Each winning team member will receive a PowerSquare Qi Wireless Phone Charger.

EdTech Prize

Looking to test out a venture idea? Want to make social impact in
education? Creating a great idea means executing a vision and effectively
communicating it with others to ensure the achievement of a common
goal. The EdTech track hosted by Leading Learners at SFU's StormHacks
allows you to test out a venture idea in the educational space in any
capacity, establish your values, and turn your idea into a reality. The best team in this will receive an Expansion Pack (valued at $100 USD each) and an EdTech Bundle (valued at $100USD) to expand their idea beyond the event.

Most Creative Use of GitHub

GitHub is one of the best ways to collaborate, push code, get feedback, and show the world what you’ve built during a hackathon. To take it a step further, GitHub is now offering you access to industry tools, events & learning resources through something called GitHub Global Campus. Win this weekend’s Most Creative Use of GitHub prize category, first by signing up for GitHub Global Campus and second by using a GitHub repository to host your hackathon project’s code!
